Mt. Clemens, MI - Whether you’re new to the world of invasive species, or just looking for tips and techniques to use on your property - the Spring Invasive Species Summit is designed for you.
The event is virtual, free and open to the public and will be held on Saturday, March 20 from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Attendees will hear from experts who will discuss various topics such as hand-removal and disposal of invasive plants, and the ever popular topic: Phragmites control.
This is the third annual summit organized by the Oakland County CISMA (Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area) and this year, the event is bigger than ever - having joined forces with six neighboring CISMAs to broaden its reach and allow access to experts in a large variety of topics.
Knowledgeable speakers will talk you through all the steps of taking care of invasive species on your own property- including identification of many wide-spread and emerging invasive species, and how to restore land after invasives have been removed.
“Controlling invasive species does not stop at removal, it requires restoring the area with native vegetation," said Eric Diesing of the Clinton River Watershed Council. "This helps promote Michigan's ecology and benefits our complex ecosystem.”
Another talk will give homeowners the tools they need with common issues when controlling invasive species on a property.
“Set yourself up for success by learning how to contact contractors, what to do about invasive species in your common areas and understanding the permits required for invasive species treatment," said Erica Clites, director, Oakland County CISMA.
Additionally, participants will learn about up-and-coming invaders from Patrick Scanlon, the coordinator of the GiLLS CISMA, and how to look out for and report them.
“No one is exempt from the detrimental effects of invasive species," he said. "They are causing a whole myriad of problems in our beautiful state and costing the taxpayers a considerable amount of money. The invasive species summit is a great way for people to learn more about this complex issue and how they can help in this battle."
