Detroit, MI - Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Alex Lamont Hailey, 18, (DOB: 08/19/2003), of Detroit, in connection with fleeing from Wayne County Sheriff's Deputies.
On January 18, 2022, at approximately 1:00 p.m., Wayne County Sheriff's Deputies were in the area of East Forest Avenue and McClellan Street in Detroit when they observed a vehicle driving erratically. As the officers initiated a traffic stop, it is alleged that the defendant fled at a high rate of speed. During the pursuit of the defendant, it is further alleged that Defendant Hailey, stopped his vehicle and fired a handgun out of the driver side window in the officer's direction before fleeing again from the officers. The chase continued until the defendant surrendered in the 16400 block of Harper Avenue.
Alex Lamont Hailey has been charged with two counts of Assault with Intent to Murder, two counts of Felonious Assault, one count of Third-Degree Fleeing, and four counts of Felony Firearm. *
The defendant was arraigned on January 20, 2022 in 36th District Court and given a $100,000 personal bond with a GPA tether by Magistrate Kelsey Heath. On Friday, January 21, 2022, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has filed an Emergency Bond Motion in 36th District Court.
Today Judge Kenyetta Sanford Jones heard the motion and Defendant Alex Hailey's bond was increased $250,000 cash/surety, with a GPS tether and the condition of no driving a motor vehicle. During the hearing his attorney, J. Grant Miller moved for a competency and criminal responsibility referral for his client. The Court granted the request and Hailey will be referred to the Forensic Center for evaluation. The review date for this matter is scheduled for April 10, 2022.
"In this case we feel strongly that the magistrate abused her discretion in issuing a personal bond due to the serious nature of the allegations that the defendant fled from and fired multiple shots at e police. The previous bond was insufficient and inadequate to protect the community," said Prosecutor Worthy. "We feel that the bond set by Judge Sanford Jones has corrected this situation." *The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
