Detroit, MI - After more than 40 years of teaching constitutional law at Wayne State University Law School, professor Robert Sedler has given his last lecture. Marking the occasion, Attorney General Dana Nessel and other former students of Sedler’s who work at the Michigan Department of Attorney General have come together in a video to thank him for his contributions.
“Bob Sedler’s impact is immense and far reaching as he has instilled an understanding of the law in generations of students, many of whom now serve in this very department,” Nessel said. “I am thankful for all that Bob has taught me, not just as my professor at Wayne State, but as a special assistant attorney general and through his dedicated service to the people of this state. His unyielding belief that our constitutional rights encompass more than just lines typewritten on pieces of paper has been clearly demonstrated through his profound body of work, both in the classroom and the courtroom, and the guidance and mentorship he provided to many young legal minds is beyond comparison.”
In April 2019, Sedler was appointed a special assistant attorney general (SAAG) by Nessel to advise on matters related to constitutional law and civil rights law. Sedler also worked alongside Nessel as she successfully litigated the DeBoer v Snyder case before the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Michigan’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.
As a distinguished professor of law at WSU Law School, Sedler has taught courses in constitutional law for more than four decades. Over the course of his career, he has had the opportunity to publish his work, including a book on American constitutional law.
In addition, Sedler has had the opportunity to do extensive public interest litigation as a volunteer attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
