Weekend I-94 Lane Closures For Remainder Of East Grand Blvd Overpass Demo

Detroit, MI - Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will complete the demolition of the East Grand Boulevard overpass this weekend with double-lane closures starting Saturday morning.

The lane closures will start at 5 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, between Chene and Mt. Elliot streets. All lanes of I-94 are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24.

Fast facts:

  • MDOT is replacing the East Grand Boulevard overpass above I-94.
  • Work to demolish the remainder of the overpass will require double-lane closures starting Saturday morning.
  • Westbound I-94 will have only one lane closed Saturday afternoon to accommodate special events in downtown Detroit.

On the westbound side of the freeway, the two left lanes will be closed from Mt. Elliot to Chene streets, except from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday when only the left lane will be closed. The change is being made to accommodate traffic heading to downtown Detroit for special events taking place that night.

Eastbound I-94 traffic will be reduced to one lane all weekend as crews work to remove the center pier of the structure.

All work on this $16 million project is scheduled to be completed in late fall. The new East Grand Boulevard bridge will replace the current structure originally built in 1956. Vehicular traffic will be detoured to the Chene Street overpass during this replacement project.

This bridge replacement is part of the I-94 modernization project in Detroit that involves rebuilding 7 miles of freeway and replacing 67 bridges between Conner Road and I-96.
