Amplifying the Celebration of Black Arts (virtual event)
In this kickoff to AARP Michigan’s series celebrating Black History Month, you’ll get an exciting preview of the lineup of events happening in February featuring the works of African American composers and storytelling. You’ll also receive an invitation to create a quilt patch for the Detroit community quilt.

Hearing Black Voices, Singing Justice (attend in person or virtually)
Join AARP Michigan during Black History Month for a Carr Center and Bedrock presentation that is a must-see event, livestreamed from Detroit that will showcase African American musical performances and a discussion with the performers on the history of Black classical music and musical traditions from other genres. The program will feature the works of Detroit composers Brandon Spencer, Lori Hicks and Bill Banfield. You can also attend this event in-person.

The Secret Society of Twisted Storytellers®
In celebration of Black History Month, pull up a chair and tune in for a Carr Center and Bedrock presentation of The Secret Society of Twisted Storytellers, a livestreamed event from Detroit, Michigan featuring a lineup of compelling storytellers. Or attend this event in person! Each story is true and personal, ranging in emotional impact from moving, raw and revealing to hilarious, human and healing. All touch upon the theme of “Black Art and History.”

Sewing Our Community Together (in-person events)
Calling all artists, fiber workers and textile creatives! African Americans have long created quilts as both pieces of art and functional bedspreads. Join the tradition by creating a quilt patch to add to the Detroit community quilt. No experience necessary! Registration not required.
