Beach Water Quality Monitoring Continues In Macomb County

Mt. Clemens, MI - The Macomb County Health Department is continuing its bathing beach water monitoring program in 2021.

Beaches that are included in the monitoring program include Lake St. Clair Metropark Beach in Harrison Township, Walter & Mary Burke Park in New Baltimore, Memorial Park Beach in St. Clair Shores, Stony Creek Baypoint Beach in Washington Township, and Stony Creek Eastwood Beach in Shelby Township.

To assure residents and visitors of a safe and healthy recreational experience, the Macomb County Health Department conducts regular water quality testing beginning in April through September annually. Water sampling and testing is conducted to identify levels of E. coli bacteria. If sample bacteria levels exceed levels established in the Michigan Public Health Code, the beach will be closed to the public until bacteria levels fall to acceptable levels.

Waters with elevated levels of E. coli bacteria can result in illness symptoms including nausea, vomiting, stomachache, diarrhea, headache, and fever. Other illnesses associated with swimming in contaminated waters include ear, eye, nose and throat infections, skin rashes, and skin infections.
