CAV Pilot Project Work Begins On WB I-94 Aug 7, 2023

Belleville, MI - Work to equip the left lane of westbound I-94 with digital infrastructure to support a connected and automated vehicles (CAV) pilot project begins at 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7.

Funded entirely by Cavnue, work to install underground electrical conduit will require closing a shoulder on westbound I-94 from Haggerty to Rawsonville roads. The initial phase of this road work is expected to be completed by early September.

Afterward, crews will implement a continuous left-lane closure to complete the roadway widening and resurfacing work. Multiple lane closures may be required and are restricted to off-peak travel times. The continuous left-lane closure is expected to reopen in late November.

The proposed CAV corridor project is a partnership between Cavnue and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) that envisions repurposing the existing left lane in each direction of I-94 with technology to support CAV use between Ann Arbor and Detroit. The shared CAV lanes will enable a mix of personal vehicles, CAVs, transit, and shared mobility services. The proposed project will involve installing technology to enhance safety and efficiency for all users.
