US Steel To Begin Demo Of Building In River Rouge This Week

River Rouge, MI - US Steel this week will begin to demolish the abandoned and deteriorating Veteran’s Memorial Ice Rink/Dan Riney Hall in River Rouge under a consent agreement the company signed in November 2020 with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).

This Consent Order required US Steel to pay a monetary fine and complete a Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP). A SEP is an environmental or public health project a company volunteers to do as part of an enforcement action. As part of the SEP, US Steel agreed to spend at least $300,000 to tear down Veteran’s Memorial Ice Rink/Dan Riney Hall, in River Rouge. US Steel has until December 24, 2021 to complete the project.

Prior to any demolition of the exterior of the building, all asbestos and other potentially hazardous materials were removed from the building, and AQD did inspections to check that this work was done properly. Work will first be completed inside the building, followed by the demolition of the outer part of the building. The public may see demolition taking place on the exterior of the building beginning on or after June 21, 2021.

The project is currently ahead of schedule. US Steel has committed to completing the entire project on time, including the complete demolition of the building, leveling and filling the ground, and planting grass seed.
