Farmington Hills, MI - The I-696 “Restore the Reuther” Rebuilding Michigan project will begin bridge rehabilitation work on the I-696 bridges over Inkster Road in the City of Farmington Hills.
Beginning 7 a.m. Monday, April 10 until 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, Inkster Road will be closed under I-696 for bridge repair work. Northbound Inkster Road traffic will be detoured at 11 Mile Road and southbound Inkster Road traffic will be detoured at 12 Mile Road. Inkster Road will remain open to local traffic only between 11 Mile and 12 Mile Road up to the I-696 bridges. The outside shoulders of both northbound and southbound Inkster Road will remain closed under I-696 until the end of April.
Detours:
- Northbound Inkster Road will use westbound 11 Mile Road to northbound Middlebelt Road to eastbound 12 Mile Road, then to Inkster Road.
- Southbound Inkster Road will use westbound 12 Mile Road to southbound Middlebelt Road to eastbound 11 Mile Road, then to Inkster Road.

This $275 million project includes rebuilding the roadway from the base up, including storm sewer replacement work and rebuilding ramps at Orchard Lake Road, American Drive, Franklin Road, and US-24 (Telegraph Road).
During 2023, eastbound I-696 will be rebuilt from I-275 to east of US-24 (Telegraph Road). Westbound lanes will be rebuilt in 2024. Project details can be found at DrivingOakland.com.
Funding for this project is made possible by Michigan's Rebuilding Michigan program to rebuild the state highways and bridges that are critical to the state's economy and carry the most traffic. The investment strategy is aimed at fixes that result in longer useful lives and improve the condition of the state's infrastructure.
Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 3,328 jobs.
