Westbound I-696 Closure

Farmington Hills, MI - The Michigan Department of Transportation will be closing portions of westbound I-696 this weekend as part of continued preparation work for the rebuilding project to take place in 2023-2024. More project information can be found at DrivingOakland.com.

County: Oakland County

Highways: Westbound I-696, I-96

Closest cities: South Lyon, Wixom, Novi, Farmington Hills, Southfield

Work crews will be closing westbound I-696 from US-24 (Telegraph Road) to I-275 again to perform pavement repairs and shoulder widening throughout the weekend. This is part of the preparation for the $275 million Rebuilding Michigan project on eastbound and westbound I-696 between I-275 and Evergreen Road that will begin rebuilding the eastbound lanes next spring and then the westbound lanes in 2024.

Start date: 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2022

End date: 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14, 2022

Traffic restrictions: Westbound I-696 will be closed from US-24 (Telegraph Road) to I-275, including all on and off ramps. Traffic will be detoured to southbound US-24 (Telegraph Road), then westbound M-102 (8 Mile Road) to westbound M-5 and back to westbound I-696/I-96.

Crews on the I-96 Flex Route project have completed the work for this year. Both directions now have all three lanes open with all on/off ramps reopened. Work will resume in March 2023.

Safety benefit: This work will provide a safer and smoother driving surface on I-696 with new pavement, drainage improvements, and improvements to bridges. The I-96 Flex Route project will address directional congestion in this area by providing additional, temporary driving lanes on the upgraded shoulders during peak travel periods.
